OSGi Alliance marks 10th anniversary with 100 members, millions of deployments

Standard bearer for modularized Java applications begins 2009 with membership milestone, proven deployments across industries

SAN RAMON, Calif. – Feb. 12, 2009 – The OSGi™ Alliance announced today that 100 member companies now promote and further the proven standard for modularized Java™ and Java-based technologies. The swell of support follows recent member-driven OSGi technology advancements and deployments in the enterprise and mobile markets and builds on the organization’s successful roots in embedded markets.

Over the past 10 years, members have created a vibrant ecosystem that drives and promotes the dynamic module system for Java, the OSGi Service Platform.

“The OSGi Alliance creates the trusted technology developers and companies choose to build and provision Java applications,” said Stan Moyer, president of the OSGi Alliance. “The alliance has evolved from its ‘services gateway’ beginnings to define platforms that enable the creation, deployment and management of home, networking, telematics, mobile, desktop and server environments. OSGi technology is integral to leading open source community projects including Eclipse Equinox and Apache Felix.”

Major OSGi Alliance Accomplishments
Members from embedded and networked device markets drove initial OSGi specifications targeted for smart-home and telematics solutions. Recent specifications have expanded OSGi technology to serve desktop, enterprise and mobile markets as well.

• Every leading enterprise application server provider around the world is using or  intends to use OSGi technology to modularize their Java software and allow applications to be adapted remotely and in real time. Leading vendors using OSGi technology include IBM’s WebSphere, Oracle’s WebLogic, Paremus’ Infiniflow Service Fabric, ProSyst’s ModuleFusion, Red Hat’s JBoss, SpringSource’s dm Server and Sun Microsystems’ GlassFish Enterprise Server. SAP AG has announced that  it will use OSGi technology as the foundation for its next generation of the NetWeaver application server.

• The OSGi Alliance released the OSGi Service Platform Release 4 Mobile Specification for use with Java Micro Edition. Sprint recently launched the Titan software platform, which is based on the OSGi Mobile Specification, to create a Java developer environment for Sprint smart phones. It allows outside developers to create rich Web applications for phones, and move Eclipse-based or Web-based applications from the desktop to Sprint handsets.

• The embedded OSGi Service Platform is used in many government-funded research projects, and enables secure and dynamic remote management and administration of a broad variety of products from companies like BMW, Bombardier, Cisco, eNeo, Federal APD, Groeneveld, InterComponentWare, Korean Telecom, Miele, Nissay, Portus, Raumcomputer, Ricoh, Siemens, WindRiver and Xanboo.

• OSGi technology is critical to important open source communities and projects like Apache, Eclipse, Glassfish, Spring, and JBoss. Within the Eclipse ecosystem alone, OSGi technology enables thousands of products to interoperate.

• The OSGi Alliance has launched user groups in nine countries throughout the world: Belgium, China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

• OSGi Alliance members currently work in five expert groups to direct OSGi technology. OSGi specifications are developed in these expert groups along with reference implementations and compliance tests. Expert groups include the Core Platform Expert Group (CPEG), which focuses on the OSGi core framework and fundamental services, and industry-specific groups that extend the OSGi Service Platform to vertical environments: Vehicle (VEG), Mobile (MEG), Enterprise (EEG) and Residential (REG).
